It started when we took delivery of the new Mercedes SL55 AMG. The MFO soon realized that the performance was way beyond a normal road car and that if we couldn't find a way to blow off some steam, then he was destined to develop a close relationship with the local FHP officers.
We needed to find a closed road where the beast could be unleashed. Moroso Motor Sport Park in Jupiter Florida came into mind and, yes, it seemed that we could rent the track for a day. At that stage things got out of hand. It seems probable that Jethro in a jealous fit, persuaded David to suggest taking Jethro along to the track and that we should have a "Pinks" type challenge where he would shame Mongo into running against him on the ¼ mile. Now you know that Mongo would never back away from a challenge. So now he wants to go as well. Oh well, if we are faced with taking 3 cars, we might just as will take some of the others. Within minutes the GTO, Abe, Mr. Down and of course Redford had all signed up. Then Lurch decided he would like to lead a "funeral" procession on the track. Yes, it was completely out of control now but we would need transportation to get 8 cars to Jupiter and back. The MFO calls several trucking companies.
MFO: "Hello, yes, I need to transport 8 cars to Jupiter"
Truck Co.: "Ok, what kind of cars are we talking about?"
MFO: "well, the first one is a Cadillac Hearse, it's about 22 feet long and has a casket in the back."
MFO: "Hello? Hello? Oh dear we seem to have been cut off!"
After about 3 or 4 of this type of calls someone said, "You need to call this guy." They said Dave of Transport Masters in Boca Raton would probably be able to help.
We called Dave and he actually answered the phone! We mentioned the hearse and waited for the hang up. He was still listening! "And what else?" He said. "Next would be a 1926 GMC pickup that is finished out like the Beverly Hillbillies truck." He was still listening. We had found our guy!
So, we called Kelly at Moroso, booked the track, confirmed the transport with Dave, arranged video and still photography, had a local restaurant cater some lunch and now we needed a driver to help us on the track. How about John Zuccarelli, he's the regional executive for the Florida region of the Sports Car Club of America.
MFO: "Hello John, you don't know me but we'd like you to help us with an event at Moroso, we understand you know the track well."
JZ: "Well, yes I do, what sort of help would you need?"
MFO: "Er, Um, we will have an SL55, a Roush Mustang and a 1970 Chevelle. oh and you might be able to drive the Cadillac Hearse or the Beverly Hillbillies Truck."
JZ: "Did you say Hearse?"
MFO: "Yes"
JZ: "This sounds too weird. I'm definitely interested!"
So, it really wasn't that difficult was it? Well no it wasn't but we were certainly lucky to find a bunch of odd balls that seemed to understand us.
Anyway, check the videos and the still photos to get an idea of our fun day.
