Gail mentioned that she would like to get a 1950's convertible that she could show, we mentioned this at Realistic Auto Restorations and, within a few days, they saw an ad in Hemmings that sounded like a car they themselves had restored several years ago. When we contacted the owner in Connecticut, sure enough he was the guy they had sold it to!
We knew if it had been restored by Realistic they would have done an awesome job, so we broke all of our usual rules about buying cars and asked him to send the car down to Florida.
When it rolled off the transporter it was everything we had hoped for, a flawless total restoration of an unusual, highly optioned vehicle with only 34,000 original miles. A 1955 Pontiac Starchief Convertible. This year was the first year for V8 power, a Pontiac Stratostreak, the first year for 12 volt electrics. Although there were more than 20,000 sold we have learned 2 things on the show circuits. A. Everyone's father seems to have owned one of these and B. You almost never see one around these days (we have seen three in 2 years)
Once the engine had been thoroughly serviced, the suspension and brakes checked, cleaned and lubed, "Chief" became Gail's pride and joy. In addition to winning many local type shows, Chief has been awarded a National First Place Junior award, a National Senior award and a Blue Ribbon all by the AACA. He is no longer a "Trailer Queen" but drives to all shows and trips.
